History of rose-cut diamonds

Popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras when many diamond shapes began in the Dutch part of Europe, rose cut diamonds were a hit for a very long time.

During this time in the 16th century, diamonds were still measured and cut by hand, and rose cut diamonds were designed to look like the swirls of petals on a rosebud.

The rose cut then lost demand with the advent of new jewelry trends and was completely lost to the popularity of brilliant cut diamonds in the 20th century.

During the rose cut era, diamonds were cut to maximize carat weight using simpler tools. As technology evolved with the goal of maximizing the brilliance of the gemstone, the brilliance of the stone began to be considered more important.

As new technology came along the cuts became better and more brilliant in style, but this made the true antique rose cut very rare and valuable.

In recent years, rose cut diamonds have come back into focus and use again. As more and more people turn to unique alternatives to the common diamond cut, the rose cut has a lot of appeal, offering a more simple yet elegant, unexpected yet classic look.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strong Points:

  • -A rose cut diamond looks larger than a brilliant cut of the same carat weight.

  • -The cut is not conditional on any shape, in fact it can be cut into a myriad of different shapes.

  • -One side has a flat base and is inconspicuous, so the stone is close to your finger, perfect for a more active lifestyle.

Disadvantages

  • -A rose cut diamond has fewer cut surfaces than a modern brilliant cut diamond, so it shines less.

  • -There aren't many rose cuts on the market that have beautiful dome cuts, so it can be difficult to find.

  • -Rose-cut diamonds are hand-cut, so facets often have small imperfections and asymmetries.

cut

Like the cushion cut and its predecessor, the old mine cut, the rose cut was created long before there was electricity, so it was made to look best in the light of a candle. To achieve this, the polisher makes the final cut based on what is best for each particular stone.

Most of the latest rose cuts have a dome-shaped top with a flat bottom and 24 cut surfaces.

Color

When it comes to color, it's much more versatile than a standard brilliant cut.

The subtle dome-shaped brilliance is warm tones of champagne, opaque white, gray, black and yellow tones, and the growing popularity of salt and pepper diamonds are all common colors found in rose cuts.

Clarity

Rose-cut diamonds give off a more transparent, glassy luster, in contrast to the flashy brilliance of the latest diamond cuts.

The transparency of the stone allows you to enjoy the raw stone as it is, rather than hiding the scratches in the stone.

carat

Rose-cut diamonds look larger than other diamond cuts when viewed from above due to their shape.

It often looks the same size diameter as a round diamond, which is twice the carat weight.

Rose-cut diamonds are available in a variety of carat weights, but it is estimated that only 0.1% – 1/1000 – of modern cut diamonds are rose-cut.

Choosing the ideal rose-cut diamond

Rose cuts come in a variety of shades and qualities, and those who like complete transparency should choose diamonds with a highly transparent dome-shaped cut.

If you like the aesthetics of antiques and vintage jewelery, then diamonds that take advantage of their respective characteristics are a good choice.

Like transparency, color is actually a personal choice.

Rose-cut diamonds also come in a wide variety of shapes, including rounds, ovals, kites, and pear shapes.

There are so many options that it's a good idea to narrow them down before you start looking.

Rose cut diamond price

Rose-cut diamonds are rare and price information is as widespread as cut diamonds and difficult to obtain.

It is clear that prices will fluctuate significantly based on diamond transparency, color, shape, size, and a variety of other factors, including the demand for certain types of rose-cut diamonds.

In recent years, salt and pepper diamonds and rose cuts have become extremely popular.

Demand is high, but it won't be as expensive as round brilliant cuts and many other brilliant cuts.

Ring design with rose-cut diamonds

If you like vintage and antique engagement rings, rose-cut diamonds are perfect.

Choosing a rose cut gives your engagement ring an elegant and unobtrusive look, unlike other modern diamond cuts. Every time you find the perfect stone and glimpse it, it will bring a smile to your face!
